guys!
college is crazy. i spent the day in class and then hiking down into pogonip national forest with a few girlfriends. i am exhausted, and I haven't even checked fashion week yet, its devastating. Next quarter im hoping to crash a class on the music of the grateful dead, but if that doesnt work out then im taking a History of the Holocaust class, Geology, and MicroEconomics. It's brutal. so i seriously wanted to apologize for the lack of blogging, because its been bad. over a month!
so im taking a leave of absence! im dropping this for a little bit because i need to revamp and rethink what i want for this place. but i love you all!

this blog has turned into a lot of pictures, basically zero of myself (no girls, thats not me a few posts down, its the beloved Alexa Chung!)! Moving into college made the whole outfit-photo-taking process really difficult, and I got really lazy about the whole..keeping-up-with-my-blog thing. i had an amazing new year, i hope you guys did too! im officially giving up soda, i swear to you i think dr pepper is like my heroin (twilight reference anyone?)...anyway. i spent the night with a bunch of friends and the day at the farmers market and with my sister. it was cold, but then again does it ever really get COLD in san diego? meh. i wore a miss sixty dress and an aa hoodie with tights and flats, but there arent really any decent outfit pictures that arent incriminating in some way or embarrassing in another. ha, im sure you understand.

i love that both the sartorialist and the facehunter found this girl on the same day and took her picture. she must have felt like a celebrity! I think this says a lot about the two aesthetics of the guys, the facehunters younger more intimate thing that he's got going on, and scott's formality and elegance and utter chicness.

i love them both, and it helps that this girl is dressed to the nines!

okay so i'm not even sure if i would have noticed this on the street, but scott schuman has an eye...it's undeniable. the layering skills that this girl has are impeccable. i love how delicate the fabrics are and yet how the look is sturdy. i'm going to seriously have to look into figuring out how to be better at layering--i always feel like it's too much of a hassle. I like it when i can just put something on and have it look good. but looking at this it's so obvious that with the right tricks it can bring an outfit to a whole new level.

i dont really know what this day was about. the gingham dress proved to be entirely comfortable and handy though, i have to say. one of my best friends was leaving for college and so i visited her and was so starving by the time that i left her house that J, J, A and i went to get burritos and carne asada fries at the best mexican place around. the camera came out, and the rest was history.

I guess I should explain where my mind was in creating this post. I have a macbook. That macbook, as all you users out there are bound to know, has a sent-from-heaven program called iPhoto. It's the greatest, most efficient and suave-looking photo storing program around (well, to me at least...). Amongst the pictures of my friends and i from the summer, my pictures from india, and an inspiration folder that is getting extremely out of hand, I have my Sart folder. I was trying to figure out if I could ever narrow it down to be images that one hundred percent inspire me in some way or another, and make it a more condensed version of the 750+ photos that I currently have in that folder. So I decided to start with men's. I didn't originally plan on making this a double entry, one for each gender, but I figured it might be easier that way. I also realize that i didn't save nearly as many men's photos, but it doesn't mean that the guys don't inspire me all the same. And so here it goes.

This picture has just been posted the day I first discovered Scott Schuman's blog. I didn't really get the blog but I remember thinking, my GOD that guy looks good. Why aren't there people dressed like that where I live! Ha, and I bookmarked the page after frantically scrolling through the archives and taking note of all the moments that have been captured over the months. This guys pose, the cuff at the bottom of his pants, the scruffiness, and the way he looks huggable, too.

Hmmm, possibly one of the sartorialist's photos that will go down in history, given that it is entirely epic. It makes anyone question why that looks so good when nobody walks around like that. You'd think if people could look that good with a few mere adjustments, that everyone would do it! But no, this guy. I love his pose. How it's obviously candid, but the way he stands, hips forward but completely relaxed. it's great.

A faceless outfit. A timeless outfit. Proportions for any decade, in a european country, in the fall. This picture makes me think of books, and painting, and walking for a really long time so that your feet hurt, but then making your way home and collapsing into bed, entirely exhausted.

Scarves. I am getting angry with california for being so hot all the time, since I am missing out on opportunities to do things like this. Actually, I'm not sure if i could EVER figure out how he tied this, or where he got something so cool looking, but he could be wearing a 2 dollar pair of jeans a tshirt and he would still stand out like a diamond. his eyes sparkle!

THE ULTIMATE SUMMER LAYERING. I'm really not sure who puts a cardigan on themselves that way, but this guy makes it look like the most normal thing in the world, and he pulls it off so well with his nonchalance that I have an urge to try and mirror some of his impeccable layering skills once "fall" rolls around in california and the thermostat drops below 70.

I AM HOME FROM INDIA!
i am in love with it. thinkig about it makes me very homesick..for a place that is certainly not my home but for the people who i met along my adventures there and the experiences i had that made me feel so at home.
I've been re-adjusting into being in California, and had an AMAZING day today at the beach with some of my best friends. i actually went in the water, which is a rarity, with my friend jasmine and that was excellent...and not too cold! I fell asleep reading Eclipse and stayed asleep for an hour or so before a delicious dinner at the beach house and then ghirardelli shakes for dessert.

im completely out of the habit of posting outfits, but i'm going to try really hard to get back into it. i promise! i missed home! its good to be back.

I never thought I'd really be the type to wear a tie-dye shirt out in public. My uncle is obsessed with the Grateful Dead and used to always buy me these horribly overdone tie-dyed shirts with weird shades of green and yellow that I couldn't ever possibly bring myself to be seen in public wearing. However, I'm leaving to go to India for a month very soon and so yesterday my friends and I had a party to celebrate America and all her traditions (yes, there was vanilla ice cream, indiana jones, apple pie, hot dogs on the grill, lemonade, bare feet...) before I leave. What could be more american than tie-dye! So with the help of a tie-dye kit from Michael's and some Hanes v-necks from Target, we took it upon ourselves to make cool shirts of our own. I have officially become a tie-dye convert.

in other news, im leaving for india on july 2nd! and i'll be gone until early early august doing community service work and the like. and seeing the taj mahal! and returning with indian accessories!

I think that, these days there's no way I can find space to bloggity blog as well as soak up the fabulous hodgepodge that my life has become.
I am really happy! I have new friends and old friends and a new band and a caravan and people around me who randomly break out into song and dance. it should be noted that they are all just as fabulous.
I haven't been home earlier than 1 am for what feels like a week, and the majority of those days included waking up at the crack of dawn.

I've been thinking about how horribly my lack of camera has affected my blogging abilities. I take photos with my Macbook (my lovely Macbook, which I am not complaining about, but still...) but I always feel like I'm never able to truly showcase my outfits in all their splendor and without the colors looking always so washed out.

I've decided that a Nikon D60 is what I need for this betterment of my quality of life. I already have such grand ideas!

I see pictures like these and outfits like these and I'm utterly convinced that my post a few posts down about the hipster headband was spot on. Very very few could pull this off...and yet, when someone pulls an outfit like this off, it's immaculate. That's why I love Erin Wasson--she's the epitome of a seriously cool girl who seriously doesn't care what people think of her outfits, and yet she knows she's super hip and super stylish.

Hellooo, new-pair-of-gladiators! Because of the whirlwind of studs to be found in and around the fashion industry these days (from Givenchy to Mary-Kate Olsen), I guess you could say that I've been sucked in. I picked up these gladiator sandals (perfect for summer and pool parties and things of the sort...) and have strapped them on already. I was talking to the woman about the shoe store and she was telling me about how she always wore them in the 80s. I, however, was entirely unwaware of gladiators in the eighties. obviously. So this is kind of my first go-round with these puppies, but I expect you'll be seeing a lot of them.

Love them or hate them, the ‘hipster headband’ as it has been dubbed, is a very real part of accessories today for people across the fashion spectrum. This piece, a usually-thin and decorative strand of some fabric or another is to be wrapped around the head at varying levels to increase the wearers cool factor by an immediate ten percent. People like Erin Wasson, Zoe Kravitz, Cory Kennedy, and Iekeliene Stange can be seen sporting these headbands in varying widths and hues. Although many people may consider these items overly trendy or already ruined by the label of ‘hipster’, it is actually quite the contrary. Worn well, a hipster headband, paired with a simple t-shirt and jeans can take an outfit from boring to eye-catching.

The trend was first seen on the streets by powerful people in the fashion industry—people like Karl Lagerfeld, who has the power to create new trends all by himself, and others like Iekeliene Stange, current top model, who has the power to officially turn an accessory from a random rope into a completely dazzling cherry-on-top for an already wonderful outfit. At Chanel’s most recent couture show, while models strutted around in flouncy cocktail dresses and gorgeous floor-length gowns, a version of the headband made its very own apperance, although this time it was procured out of elegant seashells.

Although it is clear that the hipster headband has no chance of fading in the future, one element of this trend worries me. There are hundreds of high-up, extremely (beyond words) chic women who have already passed the years where they can get away with wearing a string of sea shells across their forehead. The hesitance to embrace this trend most probably comes from its lack of adaptability. Something about it (the way it bunches up the wearer’s hair, or adds an immediate look-at-me element) makes it something that is looked down on by those who find it more irritating than anything else.

I know that my mother is an incredibly chic and hip woman who, while putting together an outfit, always considers what Scott Schuman, the Sartorialist, would think of it (and if he would stop to take her picture). I know, however, that she never completes an outfit with the many ribbons and bows that I have hanging in my bathroom.

So, the hipster headband is a juxtaposition in that it is loved and hated, it fits any body type and yet only a few people can pull it off, and it is making a comeback from decades past, and yet it still seems fresh and new. Care to join the trend?

Helligirl from tfs just posted these pictures she took of the ed, and as you can see, I am completely lacking in the patience it would take to wait for scans. Erin is one of my favoritest favorite top models of all time, and the fact that this editorial is so f***ing awesome really helps. I just got back from a short trip to San Jose. I mean, what better piece of clothing to wear on the plane than a little romper-y jumpsuit! I actually picked it up in northern cal and wore it the earliest chance I got.

The trip was successful, accomplished what I was up there to do, and got new clothes in the process (including the new super sheer SUPER soft v neck from urban)

I'm veeery excited for these new purchases. Oh! I forgot to say, I also got a tee by Truly, Madly, Deeply and it's really one of the comfiest I've worn in a while--which is saying a lot, as I wear nothing BUT v-necks.

The High Waisted Skirt

Alright ladies and gents, we're back in business!

Got my computer back from the Apple store (I am always in awe at how crowded that place is) and it even ended up being free because the damages were covered by my warranty. praise the gods!

Anyway, I'm wearing this high waisted skirt that my mom gave me and a tank top from american apparel, I've sort of realized through having it that having a well-fitting, white, plain old tank top can be really an amazing wardrobe staple.

A Few of my Favorite Things!

Exposed zippers and intricate blazers
One of my favorite blog writers in the blogosphere, Rumi at Fashion Toast (see my links) was just recently raving about a dress at Topshop that she had found that had this divine exposed zipper in the back. You know, to be honest I had never really thought about that. For me, a zipper usually just makes sure my dresses stay on and my pants stay up...but Rumi quickly had me convinced that these zippers can be quite a statement. The dress that Whitney is wearing here has that appeal. Who even cares if it's boring from the front, because when she's walking away, you know everyone (or at least the people who can appreciate fashion) will be left slack-jawed. As for Lauren's blazer (and super-stupendous dress...YSL? anyone know?) and the cute little white buttons give the look an amazing nautical feel that I definitely love. It helps that The Hills is one of my guiltiest pleasures...!

Chains at Givenchy.

Mariacarla and....well, everyone else at the most recent Givenchy show were touting these layers and layers of gold chains over their super-chic black shifts. I used to layer necklaces in like, the 8th grade, but they I kind of became more of a rings and bracelets kind of gal--necklaces, more frequently than not, just seem so fussy to me most of the time! However, seeing my favorite models at one of my favorite designers fashion shows swathed in these elegant and simple and thin (read: non fussy?) chains makes me yearn for a few of my own.

Super-Huge Sunnies for a California Girl

This photo of Elena Melnik at the Basso and Brooke show (I don't recall the season) kind of got me thinking. Usually, I wear glasses. I am totally proud of my geeky frames and I'm definitely not concerned about my image as a well-dressed person because of my glasses. However, this glasses predicament makes sunglasses so much more difficult. These shades are pushing me to buy contacts for the days I head to the beach. I don't know, I think it's because they don't look expensive and they have that sort of allure of a cheap pair bought at a random shop on a random street (probably what I would end up doing, seeing as I can't afford super-expensive sunglasses). But seriously, I just love them.

Old Balenciaga Campaigns

Woah, right!? Liya, Gemma, and Isabeli are so working this ad I can't even take it. The new Balenciaga ads have been very robotic as I'm sure you've noticed..and they don't exactly draw me out to splurge on a top that looks like my shoulders are made out of metal. I like this ad because of the flowy-ness and the slouchy boots and the cutouts and the black and white. I WANT these pieces, isn't that the sign of a good advertisement?

Agyness on a rent-a-bike
Okay, I understand that this picture was taken for editorial, fashion-y purposes, but why can't I just believe that Agyness rides these bikes in her normal life (she does) with these Givenchy stunner heels on at the same time (she doesn't). I was in Paris and never got to rent a bike, so for now, these pictures of Agyness are all I've got. Plus, I realized all the chic ways to ride a bike.

I see pictures of her all the time, the not-so-frequently photographed celebrity, and yet the dark horse in the Hollywood cyclone that has already vacuumed up the likes of Britney, Lindsay, and Paris. Keira's look is usually a bit more grunge than this, involving a slouchy hat and combat boots with a dress (still totally stunning) but this high waisted look with that perfect white blouse and the simple gold bangles and jewelry as an accent just looks so stupendous and chic (chicly stupendous!). Even though she's wearing Ray-Ban Wayfarers, which have been kind of overplayed recently, I still think she wears them with an attitude that's not so 'look at me im hip with wayfarers' and more, 'i need some sunglasses..it's bright out!' You agree?

One of my other favorites is American Idol, on tonight, and I'm off to eat dinner and get ready to settle in for some Dolly Parton tunes (the theme of this nights show). I used to really keep my eye on Natasha Poly because of her sunken in cheeks and sort of Russian flair. But then she kind of stopped doing exciting work for me and I wasn't as interested...especially since newer models came around like Iekeliene and Agyness who are so out there. But, I've realized from this picture backstage at michael kors (and recent updates to her thread at the fashion spot) that she's got a spunk all her own. enjoy!

Also, I need to mention that on my flight coming back from Hawai'i my computer had an unfortunate incident with a can of Sprite and now it is in the Apple Headquarters somewhere being taken apart and restored to newness. I am struggling with this other family PC, and since I take my pictures using my mac, I may not be able to post an outfit for, according to the mac man, '7 to 10 days'. Bear with me, I'll definitely still update, just not with my outfits. And soon I'll have myhands on all the Hawai'i pictures and I will be able to put those up. get excited!

However, I thought I'd post a few of the better ones just for documentation purposes and because I want to maintain some sense of style no matter what I'm doing or what tropical locale I am visiting. Here I am, taking an afternoon break from all the sun I've been getting here in Hawai'i. I've got on a bathing suit (urban outfitters) and a t shirt (american apparel), but I find myself being drawn back to these images from jakandjil.com which feature (from left) Irina Lazareanu, Maryna Linchuk, and Emina Cunmulaj bundled up during fashion week...almost certainly facing chillier temperatures than what I am experiencing at this very moment.

I just think that regardless of season, certain looks can be extremely inspiring, and as Scott Schuman the Sartorialist talks about all the time in his blog, a look may not be sartorial in the WHOLE, but certain elements of it can stand out as something to be remembered. So starting with Irina, I seem to find myself daydreaming regularly about this shiny top/tattered denim shorts combo. Especially with the beat up shoes. I'm constantly trying to figure out a way to wear what would usually be considered nightwear (for clubbing etc) in my daywear. I think Irina has provided a wonderful example of how to dress down a glitzy top and make it perfect for day. The big black bag is lustworthy as well.

Second is Maryna's outfit that is quite wintry but so classy and chic and yet youthful that I can't seem to take my chlorine-saturated eyes off it, no matter how much it hurts to look at the screen after a few hours at the pool. I love the way she mixed up her layers with the tank and the shorter (luxurious, gold-emblazoned, zipper-saturated, totally worn in the perfect amount) leather jacket. She wrapped that scarf expertly (i'm still trying to get it right!) and has a commanding presence that doesn't really let up. I suppose maybe that's one of the many reasons that she's in both DSquared2 and Mulberry campaigns this season...not to mention a few other that I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Finally is Emina, rocking shiny leggings, menswear, a vest, leather, and a fedora...and completely doing it un-ironically. She's wearing an outfit that has probably been worn in one way or another by every teenager and young hipster. However, I think it's the little things in this look that make it work. The well-painted nails (although she probably didn't paint them herself considering this is show season), the big sneakers probably worn for comfort and yet looking like a million bucks, and the wispies sticking out of her fedora (fedora's definitely call for softer hair). I just like how it looks like she threw this on before or after a show and managed to catch my eye in a way that some of the looks on the runway have failed to do.

I admire the way this girl can work it. Whether she is pulling off the shredded-beyond-practicality Maison Margiela shredded jeans or modeling in an unusually demure (for Juergen Teller) ad for Marc by Marc Jacobs, she always seems to be a step ahead of the rest. Her Sri Lankan roots and fiery reggae infused music have given her the image of a partying rock star but I think, beyond that, she is completely fashionable in a really sartorial sense of the word. I admire her daring and her totally committed way of living (and i envy those lips...), and I think that, listening to her music or seeing her face staring out at me from the newest TeenVogue, she's got an appeal beyond the mischa's or lindsay's of the world. Something more, I say.

I was reading on the extremely reliable fashionspot that she may be abandoning music because her heart is not fully in it, as well as the fact that she has directorial aspirations and is maybe hoping to reverse the scenes she's been surrounded by and take a seat in the directors' chair herself. No matter what happens, she's one to keep your eye on.

New Shoes!

I was talking about the new pair of shoes I got at urban outfitters a few posts back, and I can finally show you. I've been trying to pull them off a la Ashley Olsen and her well-worn Jil Sander flats sort of like these ones. Loose american apparel tees, cardigans, plaid, and cuffed pants or shorts galore!

Meanwhile, I'm really feeling the intense desire to own a new pair of strappy high heels like the Givenchy or chunky Chloe heels we saw this past season. The number of heels I can actually wear out for a night (call me crazy, but wearability is actually really important to me) is down to..2. One by BCBG and one by Betsey Johnson. And while flat shoes may be way more of my tendency, I'm still feeling the need for height and glamour to go along with some of the new dresses I've picked up recently. The hunt begins!

Talk about comfy. These jeans from J.Crew were a total impulse buy and yet have totally served me well. The top I just bought (for my trip to Hawai'i!) from Urban Outfitters and the bag is vintage, from Paris.

I guess this day was very simple...just errands and such. The shoes are the best part haha...but I'm sure I'll be wearing them again.

This woman, Melanie Huynh, who I'm sure you are all extremely familiar with (if not, hit up thefashionspot.com!) is too irresistably fabulous not to give an homage to here.

She is a junior editor at french vogue, and whenever she is photographed about town her looks are always so youthful and fun and yet extremely put together. Brava Melanie, you are an inspiration!

I think it's the mixture of masculine elements, like the oversized blazers that she seems to throw over everything are what help her stand out in a crowd of overly feminine and every-hair-in-place type of women.

After reading this wondrous post

by my fellow blogger Fashion Toast (see links), I was completely inspired to do a basics post of my own. I really had to think about the things that I couldn't live without, and so here's a breakdown of what I need in sunny Southern California...

Denim...

Jeans are hand-in-hand with my identity, methinks. I know that without these, I wouldn't know what to do every morning! I tend to go for darker washes, but a couple of pairs (maybe 4 or so) are the ones that I wear on a regular rotation.

Dresses...

Okay, well I am mildly obsessed with anything feminine, swingy, and breezy (ie..almost any dress). I've collected them over the years and I rely on them for those days when I need to just throw something on and be ready to walk out the door. Also, colors in this category are crucial. I don't think I even own an LBD. Hm, I've gotta get on that.

American Apparel Hoodies...

I bought my first one of these when I came back from Europe this summer and realized that I was seriously low on basics. The purple one was inducted into my closet and was quickly worn to shreds. Then, I received two more for Christmas and haven't stopped the spree of wearing them...anywhere and everywhere. They are admittedly a bit sloppy, but I mean, every once and a while that's needed (for me at least...)

I just don't think the world would be as happy without stripes. Black and white, blue and white, brown and white, pink and grey, the list goes on and on. Some say that stripes make a person look wider, but I think they, conversely, can really flaunt anyones shape! I can dig it, for sure.

A key hipster staple, if I say so myself. I just love giving an outfit that extra flair by wrapping a cozy pashmina or wrap around me. They are, admittedly everywhere, but I don't mind, especially because I try and make them my own each time I wear them

I guess I'm just a sweater type of gal. I know these colors in this photo are slightly neutral (minus the obvious), but the rest of my sweaters are being washed atm. I love this.

Iekeliene Stange, in all her hipster and eclectic (and far more fashionable than Agyness, by the way), was randomly photographed with a big bubble floating in front of her face and a perfect hipster headband--how appropriate. This picture reminds me, even though Iek isn't being particularly silly, of those fun nights with the people you love. And the bubble just makes it.

I miss blowing bubbles, maybe tomorrow I'll buy some and wear a hipster headband too!

Spotlight On...Mélanie Laurent

Mélanie is a young Parisienne actress who has got an eye for style. She's been inspiring me recently,

I especially dig the Chloé dress worn in such a chic way--the aviators help to make it so much less

stuffy and really young and hip. She has starred in movies alongside Gaspard Ulliel (swooooon!) and

her films include Le dernier jour and Embrassez qui vous voudrez. As luck would have it, I haven't

gotten around to seeing any of her acting so far, but I have seen some youtube things and I think she's

great. Her look reminds me a little bit of Jenny on Gossip Girl (facewise, not stylewise) but there's just

something about her that is so ...French! I guess as an American I just envy that je ne sais quoi.

I found this top in my closet today, wedged between a pair of jeans and a random hanes tee (yes, my closet really is that disorganized), and I really don't remember ever purchasing it. Regardless, I immediately was inspired with this new piece of clothing, because it's been so long since I last bought something that's unusual and special and just, easy to wear. So I decided to stick with the white/light/pale color palette and throw on this vest (which has a surprise back) and my greay jeans, which didn't fit for a while, and now they do (hurrah!)

A New Light

I've been going crazy with extracurriculars recently and have therefore had little to no natural light left when I get home. Tonight I managed to get home in time, but just barely. Anyway...

Outfit Number 1: Safari Chic.

Kids say the darndest things. I walked into my house and my sister let me know that I looked like I was in Africa. I, however, didn't take that offensively in the slightest. With the new safari look making its way back onto the runways, I was practically elated! I made sure to wear my Africa earrings to complement the rest of the ensemble.

I don't know why I've decided to name my outfits today, I think i'm just in a silly state. Anyway, I'm sure you all recognize this AA dress--I've barely worn it because it's been too cold, but today was nice...at least for a while.
